Episode 2 A mother's wicked plan The Broken Plate One evening, Mama Ebere cooked a big pot of jollof rice with fried chicken. The smell filled the house. Ada sat at the table, ready to eat. Nneka sat in a corner, her stomach growling. Mama Ebere served Ada a full plate. Then she looked at Nneka and hissed. "Go and wash the plates," she ordered. Nneka obeyed. As she was washing, her hands slipped, and a plate fell to the floor. Crash! Mama Ebere’s eyes turned red. "You useless child!" she screamed. Before Nneka could explain, a heavy slap landed on her face. "You are a bad luck child! You will never be anything in this life!" Mama Ebere shouted. Nneka held her cheek, tears in her eyes. Papa Ebere walked in at that moment. He saw everything. "Enough is enough, Nwakaego!" he said, calling Mama Ebere by her full name. "Why do you treat her like this?" Mama Ebere folded her arms. "She’s a cursed child!" Papa Ebere shook his head. He knew he had to do something. But before he could act, Mama Ebere did something worse.
